iPhone Keeps Disconnecting From WiFi: What to Check

First find out whether your iPhone loses the WiFi connection or stays connected without internet. The distinction tells you whether to investigate the phone or the network.

Quick Fix

Move close to your router, open Settings > Wi-Fi, and join your network. Compare another device on the same network before changing or resetting anything.

In this guide
  1. Is WiFi disconnecting, or is the internet unavailable?
  2. 1. Compare devices and locations
  3. 2. Restart the connection and equipment
  4. 3. Check another trusted network
  5. 4. Use a network reset only as a last step
  6. Still not working?

Is WiFi disconnecting, or is the internet unavailable?

Check Settings > Wi-Fi while the problem happens. Note whether your network remains selected. A working WiFi link does not guarantee that the router has internet access. Write down whether the interruption happens in one room, on one network, or everywhere.

1. Compare devices and locations

This comparison is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed repair. It helps avoid resetting a phone when several devices share the same problem.

  1. Try loading a new page on a second device using the same WiFi.
  2. Move the iPhone close to the router and repeat the test.
  3. If all devices fail, check your provider’s outage information. If only distant rooms fail, investigate coverage.

2. Restart the connection and equipment

Apple recommends checking that WiFi is enabled and Airplane Mode is off, then restarting the phone if necessary. A router restart may also help.

  1. Restart the iPhone normally.
  2. If you manage the home network, restart the router and modem using their manufacturer’s instructions. Tell other users first: internet and internet-based calls will be interrupted.
  3. Reconnect and test again before making another change.

3. Check another trusted network

If the phone works on another network, focus on the original router or its configuration. On a managed school or work network, ask the administrator before changing security or network settings.

  1. Test another trusted WiFi network when available.
  2. Check for router firmware updates through the manufacturer or provider.
  3. If the issue began after adding a VPN or security app, consult its provider or your administrator before removing it.

4. Use a network reset only as a last step

Apple’s path is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This removes saved WiFi networks and passwords and resets cellular, VPN and APN settings. Consult your administrator on a managed device and make sure you can rejoin your networks first.

Still not working?

If only one home network fails, contact its provider or administrator with your comparison results. If your iPhone cannot connect to any trusted WiFi network, contact Apple. Keep a short record of location, time, and whether other devices were affected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I factory-reset my iPhone?

Not as an initial WiFi troubleshooting step. This guide does not require erasing your phone.

Why does it work next to the router?

That result points toward a coverage or interference issue, but it is not a complete diagnosis. Compare the same location with a second device.
